DUNE DESIGN BY DAAN ROOSEGAARDE AT DESIGN MUSEUM HELSINKI
June 6, 2014 – September 21, 2014
Alongside the Tapiovaara centennial exhibition, Design Museum will present Dune by renowned Dutch contemporary designer Daan Roosegaarde (Born 1979). Both designers share a prominent theme of social responsibility in their work.
Design Museum’s Gallery exhibition this summer allows visitors to touch the exhibit. Dune (2006-2012) is a large LED light piece over 60 metres long that will fill the museum’s Gallery venue for the summer season. It is an interactive landscape made of hundreds of LED’s, sensors and optic fibre. This landscape of light reacts to sound, movement and touch.
‘’Dune was originally designed for a public space to create a feeling of safety. Among its various uses, it has lit the bank of the River Maas in Rotterdam.’’ says exhibition curator Suvi Saloniemi. In the exhibition space, Dune transform into an impressive light installation.
Artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde is internationally known for creating social designs that explore the relation between people, technology and space. His studio Roosegaarde is the social design lab with his team of designers and engineers based in the Netherlands and Shanghai.
The Studio creates interactive designs that explore the dynamic relation between people, technology and space. The studio develops its own technology that is internationally known for interactive projects such as Dune, Intimacy and Smart Highway.

DUNE: TOUCH & TWEET DESIGN BY DAAN ROOSEGAARDE AT STEDELIJK MUSEUM
Dune (2013) by Daan Roosegaarde is an interactive landscape of light that responds to movement and touch. It can also be installed outdoors where it can help to create a greater sense of safety in badly-lit areas. With this, the work falls into the category of social design. Dune is made out of recycled polymer and LED lights operated by interactive software.
The work is installed along the River Maas in Rotterdam, and has previously been displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The new version on view at the Stedelijk is bigger than ever.
