JAIME HAYON' S FANTASTIC WORLD
BD BARCELONA
SHOWTIME COLLECTION
Showtime
Collection for BD Ediciones de Diseño is a home furniture collection inspired
on classical MGM musicals. The concepts behind these pieces explore the
contrast between what is external and internal. A combination between organic
forms and classical details is key to its development. It exhibits passion for
finding ways were things that are not supposed to match, coexist in elegance.
Very innovative material combinations like plastic and leather were used to
create this unique collection. Act II of the Showtime Collection for BD
Ediciones de Diseño was launched in April 2007. The range includes large tables
and coffee tables as well as the elegant new chair that comes is a series of
different finishes and accessories.

CRYSTAL CANDY SET FOR BACCARAT
CRYSTAL
CANDY SET FOR BACCARAT
The
opportunity to research and exercise creative possibilities along with Baccarat
led to the creation of the Crystal Candy Set. The approach was guided by the
search for exquisite color and material combinations. With these pieces, I
wanted to replicate the richness of fresh tropical fruit using crystal and
other materials, such as ceramics. Using a variety of textures and thicknesses,
a new game of reflection has been accomplished with each of the 9 characters
that make up the collection. Diverse crystal cutting techniques can be
appreciated throughout the collection. They result in a series of soft,
feminine shapes with touch of humor. Fruity inspirations are mixed with gem
like features: pineapples, pomegranates, golf balls and water drops are some of
the ideas explored. The pieces are a limited edition of 25.

GRID VASES FOR GAIA & GINO
GRID VASES FOR GAIA & GINO
The Grid vase, was inspired by a combination of city
influences. Since moving to London I have been fascinated by British
history and the strong medieval atmosphere when I walk through the streets. I
became fascinated by tales of the knights templar, Henry VIII and the Tudors
and the endlessly rich history surrounding me. I came up with vases, inspired
by suits of armor, helmets and fencing masks. My trip to Turkey was also
relevant. I had visited the city and the beauty I had seen in Islamic arts
and crafts was very inspirational. Beautiful armor and the essence of these two
cities are very much behind this set of vases.

requested an object that would both be utilitarian and elegant, able to capture
their “Extravaganza” spirit, the word they use to describe the brand’s
personality, a combination between sophistication and creativity. Jaime Hayon’s
fantasy was the sort of input they wanted. The project, a mix of past and
future, was the result of this collaboration. The Seau and Vasque, champagne
containers, were released in late 2006.

Jaime was one of the best designers to do a special collection,” said BD
Barcelona Design founder Jordi Arnau. “He proposed to do a hand-painted
vase using a piece from the Showtime collection, hand-painted with 40 different
designs.”

FAVN
FOR FRITZ HANSEN
FAVN is
the Danish name for embrace. This piece is the result of a creative dialogue
between Jaime Hayon and Fritz Hansen. “I wanted the sofa to be based on a
shell. A shell being hard on the outside, soft and welcoming on the inside. I
wanted to create a form that embraces you, something really organic – that’s
why we named it FAVN”. “FAVN is an evolution of Fritz Hansen’s design language
that brings together the qualities of Spanish and Danish design”. The new sofa
is presented in ten unique Designer Selections; light grey, sage green, clear
beige, taupe, chocolate, moutarde, red, violet, dark blue and black. It
includes a mix of three fabrics to express the form of its three main
components; the shell, seat and back and decorative cushions. The combination
of texture and tone is appealing to the visual and emotional senses.

RO FOR FRITZ HANSEN
RO FOR
FRITZ HANSEN
“Ro”
means tranquillity in Danish. The name was chosen because it captures the point
of the chair in just two letters, thus reflecting the Nordic approach and
concept of beauty.
Ro is
made with great craftsmanship and in the highest sustainable quality. Combined
with the sculptural and elegant design, the result is a functional and
aesthetic chair that fascinates its surroundings. One seems to fall in
love with it. Ro does not compromise on either comfort or aesthetics.
Time
for reflection is a luxury in today’s world. We are all busy and always short
of time to create a moment for quiet contemplation. The new easy chair
springs from a desire to create a piece of furniture that offers an
opportunity for reflection in our urban busy lives.
However,
Ro is much more than an easy chair. It’s a 1½-seater where you can relax,
change positions and have your newspaper, computer or child next to you
and create a new comfort zone.
The
design of the shell is elegant and simple, pleasing to both the eye and the
body and offers the promise of tranquillity in both its visual expression
and its comfortable functionality. Furthermore, the form of the shell
gives you the choice of being part of what goes on in the room or relaxing in
your own private space.
“We put a great deal of effort into the form of the chair, which is inspired by the human body. We wanted a chair that was comfortable as well as beautiful. My goal was to create a slim and elegant chair that encourages reflection and comfort,” says Jaime Hayon.
The easy chair is available in nine colours: three traditional options (black, grey and taupe), three bright colours (violet, blue and yellow) and three soft colours (light pink, sage-green and sand). For a more vibrant look, the chair features two different textures: one for the seat shell and one for the cushions, which supports the contrasted expression of the hard shell and the warm and soft interior.

BOSA BY
HAYON
Hayon
has collaborated with Bosa Ceramiche for over a decade. Various collections
have been designed throughout the years. A family run business based in Borsa
del Grappa, is fully dedicated to creating the finest ceramic crafts. ‘Hope
Bird’ is a tabletop-sized sculpture that symbolises the importance of “an
optimistic approach to what lies ahead”. Designed for Italian ceramics
manufacturer Bosa, the Hope Bird stands tall and proud in a watchful position,
working to convey a message about “standing tall” and being positive. As the
Hope Bird looks toward the horizon, the 72cm-high sculpture invites viewers to
reflect on why it is important to have a “glass half full” attitude. New
ceramic side tables in two distinctive shapes, using contrasting metallic
laquer finishes. The mushroom shaped ‘T-Table’ comes in gold, copper or white.
The ‘Joya’ tables have a contrasting metallic finsih with angled diamond shaped
edges curved around the top. ‘Horamur’, this elegant piece is made in white
leather and ceramic. The use of a leather strap and shape of the ceramic piece –
reminiscent of a decorative plate – invokes historic kitchens and practicality
with a modern, decorative twist. ‘Fantasmico’ is reinterpretation of a mantel
clock has a ghostly silhouette – quiet wink to the traditional historical
mantel clocks that are often dark and gloomy. ’Fantasmico’ is a simple
and contemporary version of this decorative/utilitarian piece.

GARDENIAS
FOR BD BARCELONA
Gardenias
is Jaime Hayon’s second grand collection for BD and has thrived on the
same virtues as the first. It has quality, personality, elegance, the
right point of romanticism and lots of versatility, just right for the home
as well as contract. The collection is divided for outdoor pieces, with
the purpose of recuperating classic elegant furniture for the garden with
contemporary style, and the indoor collection, that includes an armchair
and a sofa with a sophisticated imagery, now presented with new finishes
and upholstery. The Gardenias adds now a side table carrying his distinct
hallmark. The Monkey side table is a useful sculpture. Made of solid
architectural concrete for indoor and outdoor use.

CHINOZ LAMPS
In
Jaime’s hands, the classical urn shape that we have known forever is updated
without losing an ounce of it’s former elegance.
Chinoz is a table lamp featuring a ceramic body crafted by Bosa that comes in green, red and black finishing. The dimmer runs along a vertical groove in the ceramics body. The base of the lamp is the outcome of Pere’s work, as he patiently turns the wood on a lathe in his workshop in Menorca. Later, this wood is carefully lacquered, a practice that requires patience, a slow deliberate approach. Sand, (following the wood grains), seal, polish, paint, polish, varnish. Available in black, burgundy or ocher lacquered wood and can be combined with any of the ceramic finishes. The elegant glass shade perfectly complements any choice of body and base.

THE TOURNAMENT
THE
TOURNAMENT
Launched
at the London Design Festival 2009, The Tournament, an installation created by
Hayon consists of a gigantic chess set, with 2m high ceramic chess pieces
designed by Hayon on a specially created Bisazza mosaic glass chess board. Each
of the 32 chess pieces has been handcrafted by Hayon, working with Bosa, the
Italian ceramics experts in Veneto, Italy. Each chess piece is unique, having
been hand-painted by Hayon himself. The Tournament was inspired by London and
its history and heritage. The Battle of Trafalgar was organized like a chess
game of naval strategy. Many of the chess pieces reference specific iconic
buildings in London and their domes, towers and spires. Elements of the city of
London and its history have been encoded on the pieces using Hayon’s very
personal style.

TUDOR
CHAIR FOR ESTABLISHED & SONS
Tudor
chair and cabinet for Established and Sons. Date of release: April 2009.
The
Tudor Cabinet is a continuation of the gothic and historically inspired Tudor
Chair. The family of storage systems uses simple symbolic forms to emulate the
theatrical architecture and opulence of the 16th Century. Iconic forms loyal to
the Tudor period are evident in the shapes used within the details of the
design, particularly in the glass panel and door handles. The high gloss
lacquer finish, available in white, red or black speaks of royal luxury in a
modern context.
The
Tudor chairs take their inspiration from the six wives of Henry VIII,
each with its own identity expressed through variations of upholstery and
finishing. The highly polished finishes and upholstery stitching inspired from
traditional quilting help the chairs emanate fine opulence and spectacle with
modern flair.

AFGHAN FOLKLORE FOR NODUS
AFGHAN
FOLKLORE FOR NODUS
With my
new design for Nodus in collaboration with artisans of Afghanistan, I
explore the folklore of the culture through the medium of tapestry. Inspired by
the vibrant life of Afghan culture, I incorporated certain elements
such as beautiful dresses with traditional patterns and a symphony of
instruments into the design, and paired them together with my own whimsical
style. The Afghanartisans use a very special technique of tapestry which
brings the design to life with sharp detail down to the last thread. In my
previous collaboration with Nodus, I sought to bring Japanese folklore together
with the heritage of Nodus, which has long stood for quality and the bridging
of East and West. With this new collaboration, I hope to bring happiness
to living spaces with the joyful imagery of Afghan folklore and the
craftsmanship of the country’s artisans. Jaime Hayon.

GREEN CHICKEN
GREEN
CHICKEN
The
chicken, a rather unexplored shape, found its place amongst my green dreams. I
wanted to portray this common bird as a sensational object by amplifying its
characteristics and dimensions, turning it into a modern piece, one of great
beauty and utility: a rocking chair. The movement, subtle and constant, would
give the object a zoom-like trait, a sense of speed and dynamism. My green
chicken had taken on a face, a shape, a place and a function.

CATCH CHAIR FOR & TRADITION
CATCH
CHAIR FOR & TRADITION
This
single piece, organically shaped armchair designed by Hayon for &tradition,
was inspired by the harmony of curves. Sinuous movements in nature, the push
and pull of rounded forms and the interplay of light and shadows, Curves are
both seductive and comforting, the natural embellishment and enhancement to
linear forms. The key to the design was the creation of a flexible, comfortable
shape that would adjust to various body types with its modern and inviting
form. A combination of rich materials and various finishes allow for a wide
range of options: from a basic naked shell to quality Kvadrat wool upholstery
or a luxurious leather alternative. Available in various finishes and
ergonomically designed with a high backrest, the chair is both functional and
comfortable. Celebrating versatility, it can be used in intimate settings,
casual comfort or in the stripped down minimal atmosphere of the workspace.
Simplicity, elegance and function combine to make the design consistent with
the rich heritage of the &tradition brand while introducing contradictory
playfulness, combining Mediterranean exuberance with Nordic restraint, joy and
logic in harmony with nature.

MEDITERRENEAN DIGITAL BAROQUE
MEDITERRENEAN
DIGITAL BAROQUE
The
Mediterranean Digital Baroque exhibit opened at the David Gill Galleries in
London in October 2003. The exhibit featured creatures that sign and defend the
root of creation. The house. The head. Full of fake and plastic characters.
Adult games. A virgin army defended by supersonic pigs. Engulfed in a
metamorphic fragile traditional ceramic forest. A vital and ironic manifesto
about this artist’s personal cosmogony that is devised of mature languages from
heterogeneous worlds: his birthplace, Madrid and the Francophone culture from his
childhood. Skateboarding from cani suburbs and baja California. Gestuality,
surrealism, baroque, density, dynamism, intuition, dementia, risk, tenderness, mathematical warrior of nature, energetic strength, delirium,
histrionic exaggeration, emulation and creativity.

MEDITERRENEAN DIGITAL BAROQUE
JAIME HAYON
Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in
1974. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris he joined
Fabrica – the Benetton-funded design and communication academy in
Italy- in 1997 where he directed the design department until
2003. Hayon set up his own studio practice in the year 2000 and dedicated
himself fully to his personal projects from 2003 onward, today he is one of the
most acclaimed creators worldwide.
His singular vision was first fully exposed in ‘Mediterranean
Digital Baroque’ at London’s David Gill Gallery, followed by many exhibitions
and installations set up in major galleries and museums worldwide in venues
like the: Vivid Gallery, Mak Vienna, Groninger Museum, Aram
Gallery, London’s Design Museum, Mudac Museum, Gallery Thomas in
Munich, Walker art center, Centre Pompidou, as well as the Basel Art Fair, to
name a few, attracting the attention of prestigious art
collectors worldwide. Today his works are in the permanent collections of
some of these institutions.
Hayon’s esteem and knowledge of artisan skills and his inherent
creativity has allowed him to push the boundaries of many mediums and
functions, resulting in collections for very diverse clients. His concern for
the conservation of craft skills has joined his path with high-end
traditional companies concerned with the evolution of their work. Examples of
there are his collaborations with Baccarat, Choemon in Japan, Bosa
Ceramiche and Lladro.
He has created furniture ranges for iconic danish company Fritz Hansen,
Magis, Established and Sons, Bisazza, B.D. Barcelona, Se London,
Bernhardt Design, Ceccotti and Moooi. Hayon has designed various
lighting fixtures collections for Metalarte and also in collaboration with
Swarovski and Baccarat. He has created accessories for Piper Heidsieck,
Gaia and Gino and The Rug Company. He designed his first wristwatch collection
for a new Swiss watch brand OROLOG which launched in late 2013. These
collections have put Jaime at the forefront a new wave of creators that blurred
the lines between art, decoration and design and a renaissance in
finely-crafted, intricate objects within the context of contemporary design
culture.
Adding to his acclaimed intramurals for Madrid’s La Terraza del
Casino restaurant and Camper footwear stores, Jaime is currently working on
interiors for leading hotels, restaurants and retail establishments around
the world that have become platforms to create special objects and functional
and non functional elements.
Most recently, he has completed the Nirav Modi Flagship boutique
in New Delhi, Octium – a jewellery shop in Kuwait, the Faberge Salon in Geneva,
Switzerland and the Info Center for the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
Hayon’s latest Restaurant, Le Sergeant Recruteur in Paris, is a good example of
elegance and artistic approach to the interior world. Jaime is launching his
new ‘Monochrome’ Timepiece Collection for Swiss watch brand OROLOG during the
London Design Festival 2014.
His work has appeared in the most prestigious art and design
publications worldwide. He has won numerous awards including ‘Best
Installation’ by Icon Magazine, “100 Top list” and ‘Breakthrough Creator’
by Wallpaper Magazine, Elle Deco International Award 2006 and 2012, Elle
Deco Germany: ‘Best International Designer’ 2008, ’BEST DESIGNER’
for ELLE DECO JAPAN in 2008, AD RUSSIA ‘DESIGNER OF THE YEAR’
2009, MAISON OBJET DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2010, among many others. In
2008, Jaime was guest of honour at Belgium’s Interieur Biennial, the youngest
person ever to receive the accolade. Time magazine included Hayon as one of the
100 most relevant creators of these times and Wallpaper magazine has
listed him as one of the most influential creators too.
With offices in Italy, Spain and Japan, Hayon’s main interest
is to find challenges and new perspectives continuously.
