MICHAEL VINCENT MANALO

Michael Vincent Manalo is a photographer and a photo-manipulator. His work is inspired by the imagined memories of nostalgic and dream-like environments; his works documents their decline into post-apocalyptic and nightmarish creations.

The themes seen on his work revolve around surrealism, magic realism and realism. Most of his work is inspired by melancholy, nostalgic memories, dreamy landscapes, sentimental and warm emotions to dark and brooding atmospheres; weird and nightmarish dreams; medieval fantasy to post-apocalyptic scenes; memories of being away from home and the concept of home; subjective and objective views on society and supernatural and paranormal themes. The works that he creates tries to confront the modern rules and implications of the today’s fast-paced society.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Life has always been a fascination to me. From those  inevitable school fights during the elementary years to those wild days of puberty. From the lonesome people in the parks to the 8-inched mohawked people during concerts. From feeling someone else's warmth to dealing with the blackness within.

There were a lot of emotions - pain, happiness, love and warmth, glory, success, failures, torture, jealousy, excitement, rage, pride. All these converged and met at a common point in time and space and created who I am, what I want to explore and what I hope to achieve.

Vast images come to my mind each day as a result of the radical emotions that fill me in each heartbeat. I try to recreate it as soon as I could by combining photographs and techniques in illustration to recreate those concepts in mind.

I forge these images and try to relate them to the popular tales of human drama. I try to recreate these stories by illustrating my own interpretations of these emotions or sometimes literally creating the picture wherein the emotion can be distinguised.

When I started, I wasn't aware that I started a quest: so for now, until I decide to stop, I will try to free people's minds, and allow them to withdraw from reality and give them the opportunity to dig into a wild roller coaster of a vivid dream.

Hiroshi Yoneya, Ken Kimizuka, Yumi Masuko launched 'TONERICO:INC.' concentrating on interior design, furniture and industrial design in 2002. Periodically, we exhibit conceptual ctting-edge works in Japan and Milan.

We have won quite a few awards on the way : 2005 SaloneSatellite design report award- 1st prize, JCD design award-Gold prize, Good design award 2006, and a few others.​

Growing out of the rocky tucson mountainside, Ibarra Rosano Design Architects has composed 'Garcia House' in harmony with the desert landscape. A series of three narrow platforms step back along the hillside to minimize excavation and fill, each with its own specific function. Intersecting the home in the middle, the narrowest section comprises the entrance gallery. Inside it becomes the central corridor, which separates the bedrooms from the living room, kitchen and dining room below. The lower level angles downhill and is glazed at the end to frame views of the city and catalina range beyond. Uphill the bedrooms are separated to allow southern sunlight to enter. A terrace connects them and provides a private space with a surprise. In contrast to the neutral palette of sandblasted integra blocks, birch, steel and concrete, the patio wall is painted in a bold shade of pink.

IBARRA & ROSANO DESIGN ARCHITECTS

Luis Ibarra and Teresa Rosano (AIA, LEED AP) are native Tucsonans and graduates of the University of Arizona College of Architecture. In 1999, they founded Ibarra Rosano Design Architects, and have since earned national recognition as one of Arizona's top design firms for their modern desert architecture. Their work has been published internationally and has received over fifty regional and national design awards. They were selected by Architecture Magazine as one of nine firms to represent their state in its issue on "the Arizona School", and their work was exhibited at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in its architecture and design show featuring  work from six firms based in the southwest region. They were honored with Residential Architect's "Rising Star" National Leadership Award in 2008 and were recently included among 50 international firms for their "ra50: Short List of Architects We Love" for their body of work to date.

Architecture is space. This is the basic premise of their work, and they are committed to the belief in the power of space to nurture and inspire. Luis and Teresa have been influenced by esteemed architects such as Glenn Murcutt, Judith Chafee and Luis Barragan, but also by vernacular builders who unassumingly surpassed basic necessity to achieve masterful work. They believe the goal of design is to create a structure that lasts, not just by the quality of its construction, but also by the timeless beauty of its design - an architecture that is informed by the past, responsive to the present and aware of the future.
