B & B ITALIA GRANDE
PAPILIO DESIGN BY NAOTO FUKASAWA 2009
As with the original
Papilio chair, and not only due to the zip along the back, the Grande Papilio
armchair appears as a single form made of a single material. Its shape is a
fluid design carved out of the trunk of an upside-down cone, where the roomy
upper part and backrest are truly pronounced, offering the ultimate comfort and
relaxation. Equipped with a swivel system that provides a 360° view of the
room, this armchair sets itself apart thanks to its organic and statuesque
design. The seat also has an ottoman to offer yet another relaxing position.

MINI PAPILIO SERIES
Butterflies in flight.
The design image was that of a chair that would "welcome" gracefully
- with the graceful movement of a butterfly - which in Latin is called a
"papilio". Grande Papilio was designed with fluidity around an
upside-down truncated cone. The ample space of its large upper back and the
curved shape of its cosy seat are a clear signs of a desire to offer maximum
comfort to anyone who wants to sit it this chair. This is a truly iconic
product, even though its aesthetics were not a high priority according to the
designer. Fukasawa, who puts people's behaviour before an interest for shape,
said: “I wanted the chair to look naturally comfortable, to have the same shape
that relaxation would have if it were represented by an image." The wings
that extend at the sides of the chair emphasise the sensation of comfort: in
the chair and the small armchair, they help support the hips and the back; in
the Grande Papilio chair and the Love Papilio sofa, they cushion the head to
offer isolation and tranquillity. The same spirit of simplicity, immediacy and
comfort have guided the functional development of the entire Papilio series:
the Grande Papilio and Piccola Papilio armchairs, the chairs Papilio and Mini
Papilio, the Love Papilio sofa and the Papilio bed.
B & B ITALIA PAPILIO
BED DESIGN BY NAOTO FUKASAWA
Simplicity, immediacy and
comfort were the concepts guiding the functional development of the entire
Papilio series: the Grande Papilio and Piccola Papilio armchairs, the chairs
Papilio and Mini Papilio, the Love Papilio sofa and the Papilio bed.
“I want to fall asleep
immediately. This is what a bed should make you think about when you look at
it. Feeling great.” said the Japanese designer Fukasawa.
The quest for comfort
moves to the bedroom and the double bed is the central element. Next to it, a
night table holds an open book... “that I will never finish!”
PAPILIO CHAIRS
A chair and stool in two heights, Papilio can be used in formal contexts, while also allowing for a more informal use by leaning on one of the back’s “wings”, inspired by those of a butterfly (or “Papilio” in Latin). The formal balance derives from the constant thickness of the shell and from the shape of the seat, which is sinuous in the upper part and then merges with the light steel frame. Upholstered in either leather or fabric, Papilio’s cover can be removed using a metal zipper on the back, a functional and decorative detail that characterises the entire line of chairs of the same name.

B & B PICCOLA PAPILIO
DESIGN BY NAOTO FUKASAWA 2010
“I wanted this kind of
chair to look obviously comfortable; to have the kind of shape that
“relaxation” might take if it were portrayed in a picture. There had to be
something encompassing”. Naoto Fukasawa described the original concept of his
chair Grande Papilio, presented last year and very successful with the
public and the press. Fukasawa has redesigned it in a new smaller version to ensure
that this armchair, intended
for absolute relaxation,
can fit into small rooms or even be arranged in a row. Its formal impact
remains unaltered, evoking-according to the intentions of its designer - the
idea of “a big soft toy”.

philosophies. Conveying them using such terms as “design dissolving in

he continues to put these philosophies into practice in his designs.
Fukasawa determined that the impetus for design is found in people’s
unconscious behavior and named this “Without Thought”. He has held workshops of
the same name every year since 1999 and continues to announce the fruits of
these workshops in book form.
Fukasawa is the curator of The Japan Folk Crafts Museum. He is a vice president
