JAUME PLENSA / IN THE MIDST OF DREAMS
Espoo Museum of Modern Art , Finland
14.11.2012 - 27.01.2013
An exhibition designed for EMMA by the
sculptor Jaume Plensa (b. 1955, Barcelona).
“Many of my works reflect the dualism between
body and soul, subjects which feature widely in my work.
For instance, within my light works is a
somehow moving light. This could be the soul which we can never find within the
body.”
In the darkest time of the year, the
internationally acclaimed and awarded artist, who started his career in the
1980s, creates an exhibition in EMMA around the theme of light. The forty
individual sculptures as a part of installations created in 2004–2012
will fill most of the room for changing exhibition.
Shaped like human figures, torsos and heads
will engage in discussions and dialogues in the spacious room opening up to the
surrounding landscape. Plensa’s sculptures shape the immaterial. Through the
human figure, the artist explores universal themes of life: love, despair,
memory and language. In addition to light, other important elements in Plensa’s
works are letters and words. He sees a letter as a cell, with its own “cellular
memory”. He gets many of his influences from poetry (William Blake, Elias
Canetti), music and various soundscapes.
Created in steel, synthetic resin, glass
fibre, iron, bronze, alabaster, paper and light, the works offer a
cross-section of Plensa’s career as sculptor. He has also created numerous
works on paper as well as etchings. His other works include sets and costumes
for opera and theatre productions.
Plensa is well known for his public sculptures
and art projects around the world. The most notable examples include Crown
Fountain (2000–2004) in Millenium Park, Chicago; Breathing, 2005 at the BBC Building,
London; Ogijima’s in
Ogijima, Japan; World Voices, 2009 in Dubai; and Echo, 2011
in Madison Soul, 2009 Square Park, New York. He is currently working on
public art projects for Calgary, Houston and Seoul.
Plensa exhibits his works actively with
exhibitions in museums and galleries in Europe, the USA, Japan and Brazil.
Regular showrooms for Plensa’s works are Galerie Lelong in Paris and New York
and Richard Gray Gallery in Chicago and New York.
Hair-Ice (1999) by Plensa is shown in the
Saastamoinen Foundation’s collection display Red at EMMA.

ESPOO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art is an
art museum maintained by the Espoo Art Museum Foundation. The foundation was
set up by the city of Espoo in September 2002 when the city’s visual art
operations and personnel were transferred to the foundation.
EMMA is a centre providing experiences and knowledge.
The premises in the WeeGee building offer a setting for high-quality
international exhibitions. The 5,000 square-metre exhibition space is the
largest in any museum in Finland.
EMMA displays its own collections as well as changing
exhibitions of contemporary and 20th century art, both Finnish and
international. Two art collections, EMMA's collection and the Saastamoinen
Foundation Art Collection, form the cornerstone of EMMA's operations.
A part of the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection
(more than 2,000 works in all) is on permanent display, partially in
changing, thematic exhibitions. The collection’s historical section comprises
Finnish classical modernism from the beginning of the 20th century, while part
of its contemporary art section includes international art. The collection is
among the foremost private collections in Finland.
EMMA's collection (approx. 2,500 works) includes
works on display in Espoo municipal offices, other public buildings, as well as
outdoor areas. Part of the collection is on display in the museum. The
collection was begun in the 1950s and concentrates almost entirely on Finnish
contemporary art.
The EMMA museum pedagogy department provides guided
tour services, teaching materials, activities, as well as events and other
projects. Lecture and teaching packages are available on request. Museum
pedagogical services are intended for all ages with the aim of increasing art
appreciation and supporting learning.
A fundamental part of EMMA's activity comprises
conservation, research, archiving and documentation.

If I have time to visit Jaume Plensa's exhibition during this time I would like to listen Arvo Part Tabula Rasa - Ludus with this exhibition in the museum. I always dream when I may visit some exhibition that has to be music with exhibition together.
