DESIGNER HALEN CARNAC
HELEN CARNAC is an artist, maker, curator and academic who lives and works in London. Drawing, mark-making, the explicit connections between material, process and maker and an emphasis on deliberation and reflection are all central to her practice as a maker and thinker.
Carnac was awarded a Cultural leadership fellowship in the Crafts in 2009 in order to develop ideas about how the Crafts are communicated. She is a leading thinker on slow design principles and from 2007 she curated the national touring show Taking Time: Craft and the Slow Revolution in 2009 which opened at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and toured 8 venues. In 2006 she was co-chair for the Association for Contemporary Jewellery’s conference Carry the Can and she is actively involved in developing dialogue within the Crafts having developed numerous talks and events for makers over the past ten years.
She has worked extensively in the UK and USA including Virginia Commonwealth University, Penland School of Arts and Crafts, Strelka Post Graduate School, Moscow and in 2011 as a guest Professor at Kunsthochschule Weissensee, Berlin.
Her work is held in both National and International collections. She is member of the collaborative making project Intelligent Trouble, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
